Alternative bands rock Grammys

It’s finally award season again, and what better way to celebrate the biggest hits and the best artists than the Grammy Awards?

Here are my predictions, which were made before the 55th Grammy Awards were aired last night.

Record of the Year

“Lonely Boy” – The Black Keys

“Stronger” – Kelly Clarkson

“We Are Young” – fun. featuring Jenelle Monae

“Somebody That I Used To Know” – Gotye featuring Kimbra

“Thinking About You” – Frank Ocean

“ We Are Never Getting Back Together” – Taylor Swift

Winner:  “We Are Young” – fun.

Record of the Year is always one of the toughest categories to win, and this year isn’t any different. Frank Ocean’s “Thinking About You“ was a hit and very unique, but I feel as much as Ocean deserves the Grammy, it will go to Fun. for the song “We Are Young,” which  was one the biggest hits of the year. They shouldn’t have any problem taking this Grammy.

Album of the Year

“El Camino” – The Black Keys

“Babel” – Mumford & Sons

“Channel Orange” – Frank Ocean

“Blunderbuss” – Jack White

Winner: “Babel” – Mumford & Sons

Album of  the Year is always one of the most anticipated categories. Mumford & Sons’ “Babel” was released in Sept. 2012, and with its indie-rock style, the band went on to sell 600,000 copies in the first week. Jack White’s first solo album, “Blunderbuss,” featured singles such as “Love  Interruption” and “Sixteen Saltines,” and came out in early 2012. But Mumford & Sons’ ability to sell 600,000 copies in the first week will probably over power The Black Keys and take the Grammy.

Best New Artist

The Alabama Shakes

Fun.

The Lumineers

Frank Ocean

Winner: Fun.

Best New Artist gives us the chance to look at new and different kinds of talent. The Lumineers had a break-out year, and have nice chance of winning this award with their indie-alternative style displayed in their single “Ho Hey.”

Frank Ocean also offers us a new sound, especially in his songs “Swimgood,” “Pyramids” and “Thinking About You.” I really think Ocean deserves to Grammy, but the award will probably go to fun. because of their popularity and unique sound.

Best Country Song

“Blown Away” – Carrie Underwood

“Cost Of Living” – Ronnie Dunn

“Even If It Breaks Your Heart” – Eli Young Band

“So You Don’t Have To Love Me Anymore” – Alan Jackson

“Springsteen” – Erich Church

Winner: “Blown Away” – Carrie Underwood

Carrie Underwood’s “Blown Away” is one of the best songs in this category. The song has a nice up-beat pace that mixes with Underwood’s strong vocals. The Eli Young Band’s “Even If It Breaks Your Heart” also has a strong chance to win this category but seems a lesser match for Underwood’s “Blown Away.” I predict and hope that she takes home the Grammy.

Best Rap Song

“Daughter” – Nas

“Lotus Flower Bomb” – Wale featuring Miguel

“Mercy” – Kanye West featuring Big Sean, Pusha T & 2 Chainz

“The Motto” – Drake featuring Lil Wayne

“N***as in Paris” – Jay Z and Kanye West

“Young, Wild & Free” – Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa featuring Bruno Mars

Winner: “N***as in Paris” – Jay-Z and Kanye West

This category will be hard to determine because every song was a hit in its own way. Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa created a catchy mellow tune that appeals to many young people. Nas created a song dedicated to his daughter and how he raised her. Wale’s hit song, “Lotus Flower Bomb,” mixes his lyrical skills with Miguel’s R&B sound and the combination was a hit.

But there’s not many people who can win over Jay-Z and Kanye West . “N***as in Paris” gives off a hype vibe, and even coined the word “cray,” which is an alternative to the word crazy.

Alternative Album

“The Idler Wheel…” – Fiona Apple

“Biophilia” – Bjork

“Making Mirrors” – Gotye

“Hurry Up We’re Dreaming” – M83

“Bad As Me” – Tom Waits

Winner: “Making Mirrors” – Gotye

The Alternative Album category usually turns into a popularity contest and this year  probably won’t be any different. Goyte’s “Making Mirrors” is one of the most well known albums out of the bunch. The album uses an indie-rock and indie-pop sound that makes it worthy of a Grammy nomination.

The album “Biophilia” by Bjork, and M83’s “Hurry Up We’re Dreaming” are also great albums, but I feel the Grammy will and should go to Gotye for “Making Mirrors.”

Pop Album

“Stronger” – Kelly Clarkson

“Ceremonials” – Florence and the Machine

“Some Nights” – Fun.

“Overexposed” – Maroon 5

“The Truth About Love” – Pink

Winner: “Overexposed” – Maroon 5

Florence and the Machine is a definite contender with strong singles such as “What Water Gave Me” and “Never Let Me Go.”  But I feel the award will  ultimately go to Maroon 5 for “Overexposed” because the album included the hit singles “Payphone,” “One More Night”  and “Daylight.” Maroon 5’s  pop-rock sound  will be a sure winner.

Best Rock Song

“Freedom at 21” – Jack White

“I Will Wait” – Mumford & Sons

“Lonely Boy” – The Black Keys

“Madness” – Muse

“We Take Care Of Our Own” – Bruce Springsteen

Winner: “I Will Wait” –  Mumford & Sons

This category isn’t easy to determine. This year I feel the Grammy will go to Mumford & Sons’ “I Will Wait.” Although The Black Keys’ “Lonely Boy” is very catchy, “I Will Wait” is much more popular.

Mumford & Sons released the song in Aug. 2012, and its unique folk sound made it a hit. The song will definitely win because it was the biggest hit and the most well-known out of all of the songs.
