Expect the Unexpected

As Week 3 of the NFL season approaches, let’s take a look back at a very wacky Week 2, with many unexpected storylines and outcomes. Injuries were a very common theme across the league this past week, with quarterbacks Jay Cutler and Tony Romo both going down, running backs Eddie Lacy and Tevin Coleman leaving their games, and linebacker Kiko Alonso partially tore his ACL. There are a fair share of very talented teams that are still winless, including the Eagles, Ravens, Colts, and Seahawks. Overall, Week 2 was almost nothing close to expectations.

Week 2 Game Highlights:

49ers @ Steelers: After a very encouraging week 1 victory, San Francisco was annihilated 43-18 in Pittsburgh by Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers. The 49ers running back Carlos Hyde turned in a very disappointing encore to his huge Week 1 performance. The embarrassing loss overshadowed a really solid game from quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who threw for over 300 yards.

Fantasy Football Notes: Steelers running back DeAngelo Williams played very well in the absence of the suspended Le’Veon Bell, rushing for close to 80 yards and scoring 3 touchdowns. Unfortunately, Bell is returning to action in week 3, which pretty much spells the end of the line for Williams.

Broncos @ Chiefs: Peyton Manning and the Broncos stole a victory from the Chiefs in a stunning fourth quarter comeback. The 39 year old quarterback led his team down the field on a 10-play, 80 yard drive in just under two minutes to tie the game with 36 seconds left in regulation. With under 0:30 to go, Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles’ fumble was returned 21 yards for a Broncos score, as Denver escaped enemy territory with a 31-24 win.

Patriots @ Bills: Quarterback Tom Brady was nothing short of masterful as the defending champion Patriots improved to 2-0 with a pivotal road win against the division rival Bills. Brady threw for 466 yards, and New England survived a late fourth quarter comeback. Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor finished with a respectable stat line of 242 passing yards and 3 TD’s. But he was hurt by a couple of errant throws and some bad luck that resulted in 3 interceptions.

Fantasy Football Notes: Bills running back Lesean McCoy, playing with a sore hamstring, rushed for almost 90 yards on 15 carries. As was the case last week, he will be held out of most practices leading up to week 3, in order to return to full health.

Titans @ Browns: In just his second career start, Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel picked up the win against rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota and the Tennessee Titans. But it was the Browns fourth year wide receiver Travis Benjamin who stole the show, with touchdown receptions of 60 and 50 yards, as well as a 78 yard punt return for the score. Despite his solid performance, Manziel will take a seat in week 3 against Oakland, as fellow QB Josh McCown has recovered from a week 1 concussion and will make the start.

Ravens @ Raiders: The Oakland Raiders notched their first victory of the 2015 campaign against the Ravens, in a game packed with drama and high intensity. Raiders second year QB Derek Carr played the game of his life, throwing for a career high 351 yards to go along with 3 touchdowns. Oakland rookie wideout Amari Cooper showcased all of the skills that earned him a first round selection in the draft, finishing with 109 receiving yards and his first career touchdown. If the Raiders plan on being competitive throughout the season, their defense, especially in the secondary, really has to step it up. This is a defensive unit that is already the worst in the NFL, in terms of total yards and points given up. They will look to turn things around in week 3 against a relatively unimpressive Cleveland Browns offense.

Fantasy Football Notes: Ravens veteran wide receiver Steve Smith finished with 10 catches and 150 yards. On the other side, first year Raiders wideout Michael Crabtree has been a hot pickup among fantasy owners around the country, as he’s coming off a performance of over 100 receiving yards.

Seahawks @ Packers: In a rematch of last year’s legendary NFC championship game, the Packers handed the Seahawks their second straight loss, in a 27-17 comeback win. Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers was very calm and showed a lot of poise throughout the night, while spreading the ball all around to different receivers. Seattle, on the other hand, is still searching for its first victory, as they prepare for their home opener in front of the famous 12th man at CenturyLink Field.

Fantasy Football Notes: Seahawks running back Marshawn “Beast Mode” Lynch was limited to just 41 rushing yards on 15 carries. Offseason acquisition Jimmy Graham has been nowhere to be found in his first two games with Seattle. Rumor has it that he is incredibly frustrated with his lack of involvement in the Seahawk offense. Meanwhile, Packers running back Eddie Lacy left the game in the first quarter with an ankle injury. He is questionable to play in the team’s week 3 matchup against Kansas City on Monday night.

Other Notable Outcomes:

  • Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton continues to impress with both his legs and his arms, as he led his team to a second straight victory, in a 24-17 win over Houston.
  • Quarterback Jameis Winston picked up the first win of his career, as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the New Orleans Saints. Saints QB suffered a shoulder injury in the 1st quarter, but played the rest of the game. He is considered questionable for week 3.
  • The St. Louis Rams delivered a disappointing performance in week 2, following up their upset of Seattle with a 24-10 loss to the Washington Redskins.
  • For the second week in a row, the New York Giants coughed up a 4th quarter advantage and took the defeat, this time against the Atlanta Falcons.
  • The Minnesota Vikings and running back Adrian Peterson bounced back from a tough loss to the 49ers, beating Detroit 26-16. Peterson ran for 134 yards on 29 carries.
  • Quarterback Jay Cutler will sit out at least 2 weeks, after suffering a hamstring injury in the Chicago Bears’ 48-23 defeat at the hands of the Cardinals. Arizona wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald showed flashes of his former dominance, scoring 3 TD’s.
  • Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo will miss at least the next 7 weeks with a broken left collarbone. Despite this crushing blow, the Cowboys rolled to a 20-10 win over the Eagles. Speaking of injuries, Eagles linebacker Kiko Alonso partially tore his ACL and has been ruled out for week 3. Philadelphia’s woeful offense continued to underperform, as prized acquisition Demarco Murray put up a laughable stat line of 2 rushing yards on 13 carries.
  • The highly talented Indianapolis Colts are now 0-2 after a very sloppy 20-7 loss to the Jets, in which they turned the ball over 5 times.

Week 3 Matchups

Raiders @ Browns, 10 a.m. PT on CBS: The Silver and Black roll into Cleveland for their first road affair of the 2015 campaign, fresh off a grueling victory over the Ravens. This is a perfect opportunity for an Oakland defense, the worst in the NFL, to right the ship as they take on a Browns team ranked near the bottom of the league in most major offensive categories. It’s important to note that the Raiders have only won two games outside of the Pacific time zone, dating back to the start of the 2012 season.

Colts @ Titans, 10 a.m. PT: Quarterback Andrew Luck looks to guide the Colts to their elusive first win of the season, after two very upsetting performances to start the year. Indianapolis has scored the least amount of points in the NFL so far, including zero in the first half of both games.

Bengals @ Ravens, 10 a.m. PT: In a battle of AFC North powerhouses, quarterback Andy Dalton leads his undefeated Bengals on the road to face Baltimore. The Ravens return to M&T Bank Stadium for their home opener, after losing two games that they had every chance to win. They have started off 0-2 for the first time since 2005. This is a make or break year for Cincinnati, as they’ve reached the playoffs in five of their last six seasons, only to be knocked out in the first round.

Eagles @ Jets, 10 a.m. PT: Both of these teams have greatly defied preseason expectations, but are headed in the exact opposite direction. The Jets are quickly gaining all of the attention in the Big Apple, having cruised to two straight victories over Cleveland and Indianapolis. The highly touted offense of Eagles head coach Chip Kelly has been nothing short of disastrous, en route to an 0-2 start.

49ers @ Cardinals, 1 p.m. PT on FOX: San Francisco is hoping to rebound after being slaughtered by 25 points against the Steelers last week. Arizona, meanwhile, comes in undefeated, having scored the most points in their first two games in franchise history. Hyde is the player to watch here, as he looks to provide some consistency for the 49ers and prove the doubters wrong after a very mediocre game in week 2.

Chiefs @ Packers, 5:30 p.m. PT on ESPN: Kansas City will have had a full 10 days to recover from their heartbreaking loss to the Broncos, as they take on the Packers on Monday Night Football. Rodgers has not thrown an interception at home since December of 2012, a spain of over 530 pass attempts. The Chiefs are 6-1 in their last 7 games versus the Packers.
