‘The Force Awakens’ this month from a very long nap

With “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens” set for release on Dec. 18, fans will finally get their fix of epic space action for the first time in more than 10 years.

The film has already gathered a massive amount of attention, with the official trailer reaching 55 million views in the first two weeks of its release on YouTube.

The two teaser trailers, released earlier this year, have almost 90 million views combined.

Coming along with these trailers is a whole slew of merchandise, advertising and media, including an animated TV show set before the events in “A New Hope,” and a “Star Wars” themed video game that was released Nov. 18.

But the film is what truly has the diehard “Star Wars” fans going crazy this holiday season.

“I’m super stoked, since ‘Star Wars’ is one of the most defining film franchises in history,” said junior River Moore. “It really defined the space opera, and makes you see other movies in a different light.”

Although the new installment in the original “Star Wars” trilogy won’t feature George Lucas as writer or director, fans can rest easy knowing that lifetime “Star Wars” enthusiast and reputable director J.J. Abrams is filling in for the role.

Abrams has an impressive track record already, being involved in tons of popular movies and TV shows as a writer or director since his first film in 1990.

His repertoire ranges from the science fiction action movie “Armageddon” to the recent revival of “Star Trek” on the big screen.

Hardcore fans will be relieved to hear that the film will attempt to return to a more classic “Star Wars” feel, straying away from the CGI-laden prequel trilogy with a greater focus on practical effects and loyalty to the original movies.

“It’s Star Wars, and there are going to be thousands of CG shots in this movie, but it was really important to us that whenever it didn’t need to be, it wasn’t,” Abrams told reporters at this year’s D23 Expo.

The film will feature a mixture of old and new as well. Harrison Ford, Mark Hammil, Carrie Fisher and Peter Mahew are back, in their respective roles as Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and Chewbacca.

Joining this veteran cast are up-and-coming actors such as John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, and Adam Driver, who represent the ushering in of a new era in the ‘Star Wars” universe.

Although not much is known about the story so far, Boyega and Ridley will represent the movie’s two leading protagonists, Finn and Rey, respectively.  Driver will play the new Sith Kylo Ren, a man bent on continuing the legacy left by Darth Vader in Episode VI.

Rumors are circulating on the Internet that notorious comedic relief character Jar Jar Binks will be returning as a Sith lord, but nothing has been officially confirmed as of the moment.

Five-time Academy Award winner John Williams is making a return as well, miaking him the composer of every single “Star Wars” film to date.

He is expected to be on board for the next two films in the new trilogy as well.

After buying out Lucasfilm in 2012 for $4.1 billion, Disney plans on making at least three more films.

A wide variety of spin-offs in the form of movies, cartoons and TV shows are in the works as well.

Disneyland and Disney World are adding Star Wars themed sections. The one at Disneyland is part of a  sprawling, 14-acre expansion.

Pre-orders for the upcoming film started in October, with various major movie theater companies such as Regal and AMC selling tickets for the Dec. 18 premiere.

When pre-ordering was opened on Oct. 19, large websites such as Fandango received enough traffic from “Star Wars” lovers to crash the website entirely.

All of this excitement sets the stage for what could be a record breaking movie across multiple categories.

Of the $200 million budget that “The Force Awakens” boasts, it is already projected to break the $625 million dollar revenue mark just within the first week. This would beat the current record holder, “Jurassic World,” by about $90 million.

“I’m really interested to see how Disney will take on such an iconic series,” said junior Sydney Louie.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has already received lots of praise just based on what’s been released so far.

It remains to be seen whether this film will live up to the hype.
