MTV’s VMAs Red Carpet is full of risks

Last Saturday in New York City, your favorite artists and musicians gathered together for the 33rd annual MTV Video Music Awards.  Not only is the VMAs one of the most iconic and controversial nights in music, it’s a highly anticipated night in fashion, and this year was not one to disappoint.

The popular ’70s style off-the-shoulder top has made a comeback this summer.  You always see someone wearing it either at school and on the internet.  The off-the-shoulder top was very popular Saturday night, many of the guests appeared styling it different ways, either wearing a strapless dress or as a two piece.  Ariana Grande kept her look simple and chic with a lacy black off-the-shoulder crop top and wide leg tuxedo pants, both custom pieces by Alexander Wang.  Olympic Gold Medalist Laurie Hernandez came in a strapless white and blue mini dress adorned with sequins.

The other different trends seen on the Women of the White Carpet were halter necklines, cut-outs, and feather patterns.   Supermodel Naomi Campbell sported a faded pastel green, strapless velvet mini dress by Brandon Maxwell and topped it off with a stunning glittery ruby lip, reminding lots of people of her iconic quote, “Check your lipstick before you come and talk to me.”

Beyoncé quickly became the center of attention (as if she’s not already) as she walked onto the White Carpet in a couture Francisco Scognamiglio gown, with lots of feathers covering the neckline. The ladies of “Rupaul’s Drag Race All Star Cast” recreated iconic VMA looks such as Lady Gaga’s meat dress, Britney Spears’ 2001 “I’m A Slave 4 U” look with a snake, Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” wedding dress, and many more.

Most men wore bomber jackets and blazers with studs or in exotic prints with no shirt under and printed pants.  One of the most relevant names in music and now the fashion industry, Kanye West, came in a white T-shirt with his controversial song “Famous” printed on it.  Always the trendsetter, Jaden Smith attended in a sheer top covered with a blazer and multi-color long coat with cats on it.

Desiigner looked extra happy in a baby pink suit with no shirt under and yellow loafers.  Chance the Rapper turned many heads in tan overalls, white T-shirt, a baseball cap, and a white paint splattered denim jacket.  His look becoming very popular on social media because many people see the  resemblance between him and Super Mario Bros.  Chance was also labeled as Best Dressed by MTV, People, Vogue, and many more.

For the past 30 years the MTV Video Music Awards is one of the perfect places to take fashion risks.  Major moments in the music and fashion industry has gone down at this event, such as Britney’s “I’m A Slave 4 U” dance, Miley Cyrus’ and Robin Thicke’s provocative performance that shook news outlets for months, and Lil Kim’s iconic purple jumpsuit.

This year’s MTV VMAs was definitely a show to remember because of Beyoncé’s first time performing her new album Lemonade live, Rihanna’s four-time performance and accepting her Michael Jackson Vanguard Award Achievement, and the moment we’ve all been waiting for: Drake finally confessing his love to Rihanna in front of the whole world.  This year’s VMA kept the “wild card” reputation of the show going and is one to go down in history.
