“Elf” (2003)

Buddy, acted by Will Ferrell, is an adult man raised by elves and is not satisfied that he is the only one who stands out in the North Pole. He took this dissatisfaction on his conquest to find his real parents and set out to New York. This family movie gives quite the laugh as it shows the interaction between a pessimistic businessman, Buddy’s father, and a strange, childish man who claims that he is an elf. Elf is an amazing option if you want to laugh at goofy acting and get into the holiday spirits.

“The Nightmare Before Christmas” (1993)

Are bright Christmas lights and warm hot chocolate not your thing? Don’t worry because this movie is just for you! This is the perfect movie if you want a little spook on your jovial holiday with its creepy characters covered in stitches. Directed by Tim Burton, The Nightmare Before Christmas definitely includes Burton’s signature eerie and dark embellishments found in his other movies like Corpse Bride and Alice in Wonderland. The movie depicts a pumpkin king of Halloweentown, Jack Skellington, voiced by Chris Sarandon and Danny Elfman, who becomes bored with the repetitive rituals of preparing for Halloween. On his excursion in search of the missing hole in his heart, he finds himself landing in Christmas Town. This movie is definitely a must watch if you are intrigued by the idea of the monsters and creatures taking over beloved Christmas.

“Home Alone” (1990)

Eight year old Kevin McCallister, starring well-known child actor Macaulay Culkin, gets mistakenly left at home alone and is left to fend for himself. In the midst of his enjoyment of solitude without his parents or siblings, the young boy finds out that two robbers will try to target his home. In order to protect his house, Kevin takes matters into his own hands and the con-men are unaware of their future demise. This 90’s classic is a must watch for good laughs, humorous body stunts, and a mischievous boy doing what he does best: pranks and constructing traps.

“It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946)

Director: Frank Capra

Although it doesn’t fit the typical theme of a Christmas movie, It’s a Wonderful Life’s Christmas setting is appropriate for the holiday mood. George Bailey, acted by Jimmy Stewart, is shown to be suicidal at the beginning of the movie and wishes that he could disappear. So, when an angel actually grants his wish and he realizes how much of an impact his absence has on the people around him, he begins to understand his importance and significance. If you would like to watch a movie with a more meaningful message, this black and white film is definitely a contender.

“National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” (1989)

In order to make up for his failed vacations in the past, Clark Griswald, acted by Chevy Chase, tries to compensate by planning for the perfect Christmas celebration. With over 20,000 Christmas lights and a Christmas tree that doesn’t fit the house properly, Griswald is sure that his goal for a flawless Christmas will be achieved. But with the unexpected arrival of his countryside family and the cut of his bonus check, all Clark is having is his best Christmas nightmare. In the feel-good movie, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation shows a man’s struggles to keep himself together for the sake of the Christmas spirit.
