After a very successful 2010 season in which Cal made it into the NCS semifinals, the Grizzlies look forward to getting over the postseason hump and making it to the championship game this season.

Last year, the No. 6 seeded Grizzlies reached the semifinals  before losing 3-2 to Foothill. Cal fell one game short of the NCS Championship game because of the loss.

“We have a chance at coming back,” said senior captain Steven Moen. “We have a lot of guys coming back from last year and some really good new players.”

Cal’s success could depend on its pitching, led by Evan, Eric and Logan.

Softball

Coach: Joe Callaway

2010 Record: 16-6-0 overall, 10-4-0 EBAL

Key Losses: Mariah Nisbet, Amy Niedzwecki

Key Returners: Megan Gomm, Brittany Wright, Anamarie Falzon, Carissa Heller

Key Newcomers: Katelyn Linford, Molly Martin, Rebecca Jensen

With a promising lineup and strong defense, the Grizzlies hope to improve upon last season’s success.

Coming off of a solid 2010 season that ended with an unfortunate first round NCS loss to Newark Memorial, Cal is looking to rebound and advance farther in to the postseason.

The Grizzlies feels they can do even better than their impressive season last year, as the they are closer than ever and work well together.

“I think we have a very good chance of making it to the NCS playoffs this year,” said senior third baseman Megan Gomm. “We have a great defense this year.”

2010 Record: 8-11-1 overall, 3-11 EBAL

Key Losses: James Torrey, Grant Theobald, Trevor Wong

Key Returners: Kyle Alvarez, Jerrad Kenney, Kelly Fielder, Mike Watson

Key Newcomers: Peter Kravariotis, Jaime Preston

The Grizzlies are looking for a bounce back year after finishing seventh against very strong EBAL competition.

Head coach John Britton believes the key to success for the team is to count on experienced seniors such as Kyle and Jerrad.

“We need to make the most out of the small core of experienced players we have,” said Britton.

Women’s Lacrosse

Coach: Scott Corso

2010 Record: 13-9 overall, 7-7 EBAL

Key Losses: Jocelyn Algieri, Stacey Corich, Courtney Randall

Key Returners: Jenna Herana, Ari Berry, Brittany Ward, Maddy Moore, Avi Feldman

Key Newcomers: Caitlin Segelke, Heather Weeck

After a very successful year in which Cal reached the quarterfinals of NCS, the women’s lacrosse team is looking to their core of key returners to lead them to another strong showing.

Head coach Scott Corso thinks that even though the team is fairly young, they are fast and athletic.

“I’m looking forward to working with this new group of girls,” said Corso.

Men & Women’s Track and Field

Coach: Mark Karbo

2010 record: 7-0 women, 1-6 men

Key Losses: Colleen Lillig, Vanessa Shaw, Kaitlin Piening, Andre Rawls, Jordan Emmanuel, Eric Anderson

Key Returners: Kat Hupke, Elaine McVay, Marisa Rodrigues, Heather Donner, Cory Chew, Brian Paniagua, Noel Frazier

Even after losing NCS champion Colleen to graduation, the women’s track and field team is ready to dominate in league again.

Cal’s undefeated season was led by Colleen (1st place NCS 3,200 meters) and Elaine, now a senior (2nd, 3,200m). Both of the distance runners moved onto the CIF State Championships.

Cal also sent sophomore Heather to state in the 800m, along with men’s high jump specialists, NCS Champion Andre  and junior Noel Frazier.

On the men’s side, though they didn’t have a good record to show for, individually, Cal was stellar.

2010 Record: 13-4 overall, 11-3 EBAL

Key Losses: Allen Xu, Leon Tejwani, Josh Rivera

Key Returners: Adhitya Mohan, Shyam Kumar, Matthew Soeherman, Jonathan Stewart

After a successful 2010 campaign, the men’s tennis team returns to try and improve upon a very good 13-4 overall record.

Shyam, a senior, and Adhitya, a junior, are back to lead the Grizzlies after Allen, an NCS quarterfinalist, accepted a tennis scholarship to the West Point Academy.

“Returning players need to continue to work on their game, work their best, and continue to step up their game,” said co-head coach Vivian Albano.

Men’s Volleyball

Coach: Courtney Whitaker

2010 Record: 17-13 overall, 8-5 EBAL

Key Losses: Trent Deakers, Adam Slattery, Marc Carlson

Key Returners: Josh Ho, Brian Alexander, Aquiles Montoya, Craig Horlbeck

Key Newcomers: Tyler Thornton, Jackson Barry, Chace Walsten

Last year, the team made it to the first round of the NCS playoffs before losing to Deer Valley for the second year in a row.  This year’s team hopes that it can win NCS and believe the talent is there to do it.

The Grizzlies definitely have a chance to do it, but they have to work hard, said junior Tyler Thornton. They know that nothing will come easy to them.

“We have more than enough players to step in all of the roles,” said coach Courtney Whitaker. “We won’t rely on any one player as much as we did last year with Adam.”

With a more rounded team, and many returning players, the Grizzlies hope to have a fantastic season.

Men & Women’s Swim and Dive

Coach: Sheila Nelson

Key Losses: Natalie Meltzer, Stephanie Rebro, Sophie Cheng, Helen Sun

Key Returners: Brian He, Rolland Lee, Kali Conlon, Jackie He, Ellen Perfect, Amaya Batiza, Ryan Che, Delise Batiza, Meena Tafazzoli

Key Newcomers: Jake Hoyt, Austin Thomas, Natalie Willins, Jessica Willins

With only one head coach for both the swim and dive teams, this season is going to be a busy one.

The team had a very successful season last year, as a whole and individually. Several swimmers last year made it to NCS for individual events and relays, including senior Delise Batiza, who excelled in the breaststroke, along with sophomore Kali Conlon.

“The team should do really well this year,” said sophomore Ellen Perfect. “We still have a lot of strong swimmers and some fast new freshmen.”

With a strong head coach, solid team, and key returners, the swim and dive teams look like they will be future prospects for making it into NCS.

“We definitely have a strong team,” said Delise. “There are going to be many individuals and relays that qualify for NCS.”

Men’s Golf

Coach: Mike Pottinger

2010 Record: 3-11 EBAL

Key Returners: Michael Henning

Key Losses: Justin Haley

Key Newcomers: Ian Rogers, Mike Kelly

The Grizzlies are looking to rebound from a rough season, and they’re going to have to do it without last year’s top player, Justin.

Justin was the NCS individual champion as a junior and a two-time CIF State Championship participant.

“(Justin) has been Cal’s best golfer the past few seasons,” said Pottinger. “It’s going to be difficult to replace a star like that.”
