Noel Frazier wins NCS, heads to state

by John Sexton, news lite editor

Junior Noel Frazier has added his name to the storied list of Cal High athletes who can call themselves NCS champions.

Noel won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 8 inches at the NCS Meet of Champions on Saturday at UC Berkeley.

The jump was a one-inch improvement over his mark at last year’s MOC, when Noel placed second in the high jump and advanced to the CIF State Track and Field Championships.

“At this point, [my jump] has become consistent,” said Noel.  “I’m going to keep improving.  You can expect more from me next year.”

His season isn’t over yet.

Noel and two other members of Cal’s track and field team are advancing to the CIF State Championships today and Saturday at Buchanan High School in Clovis.

While Noel has been to the CIF State Championship before, freshman Madison Ricks will be making her first trip after placing second in the 800-meter race at MOC.

Madison finished with a time of 2 minutes, 14 seconds, just over a second behind the winning time of Santa Rosa High’s Sadia Ibrahim.

“I worked hard to get here,” said Madison. “It feels good to get to state.”

Senior Elaine McVay continued her stellar high school career by placing third in the 3,200 meters at MOC with a time of 10 minutes, 57 seconds.

This is Elaine’s second trip to state after placing second in the 3,200 last year with a time of 10:51.

Junior Tori Edwards originally qualified for state in the 300-meter hurdles, but a discrepancy over another runner’s time forced her to run a make-up race at Castro Valley High on Tuesday.  She lost the race and didn’t get to advance.
