Best in humanity shines through

Following the recent bombing at the Boston Marathon, news sites ran stories focusing on the dead and wounded, pushing the tragedy into the living rooms of Americans.

The media did have very important stories to report, including the shootings at MIT, and the resulting shootouts resulting in the capture of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and the death of his brother, Tamerlan.

But what should not be ignored in the aftermath of this bombing are the amazing stories of humanity, goodwill, and courage shining through the smoke and carnage.

Some spectators decided not to run away from the bombs, but instead into the crowds of wounded to provide help and assist emergency crews.

As a volunteer at the marathon said in a forum on Reddit.com, she had to flip over hundreds of tables to make room for ambulances.

People on the sidelines began to jump over the railings to help overturn the tables.

Later, the volunteers stayed with hundreds of the runners’ bags through the night to help protect them from theft or damage until police posted guards.

One of the most impressive stories is of Carlos Arredondo, a father of a fallen soldier, who ran directly at the source of the explosions and tried to stop the bleeding of victims with his own clothing.  A picture was taken of Arrendondo pinching off the arteries of a man whose legs had been blown off to prevent the man from bleeding to death.

Even the marathon runners unharmed by the attack dedicated themselves to saving lives by running an additional two miles to donate blood at a local hospital.

Following the killing and gunfire, many online publications gave attention to these heroes, but many have stayed mostly out of network news, the most prominent news sources.

These stories deserve even more attention than they have garnered, now that the alleged terrorists have been caught.

The heroes should be remembered over the bombers because in the face of such violence and gore, bystanders acted on instinct to help their fellow men rather than protect themselves.

One can only wonder how much more horrifying the bombing would have been without these heroes.

April 15 was a tragic day, capitalized by death and harm. But when such terrible incidents happen, some refuse to back down and risk their lives to save others.

They deserve our attention and our praise, and they should never be forgotten.
