Cal clubs shined behind senior leadership

Cal clubs shined behind senior leadership

Cal High has dozens of clubs on campus, many of which have distinguished themselves behind the leadership of members of the Class of 2014.

Here are a few of those clubs:

DECA is a model business club that fosters entrepreneurs and leaders.

DECA club members compete in conferences with people all over the world with research projects or business role plays.

In the past, Cal’s DECA club competed and placed as finalists numerous times, and even placed as top three.

A small group of students qualified to go to an international conference two years ago.

As a relatively new club,  DECA has grown rapidly and acheived many awards.

The DECA club also helps fundraise and coordinate events with the school to promote the club and gather funds.

DECA also organizes many social events such as the annual teacher luncheon to promote the club and show appreciation for teachers.

Students put together a  pizza party at the end of the year as reward for doing well as a new chapter, and much more.

Mock Trial is a countywide competition that pits schools against one another as students present a fictitious criminal case.

The Constitutional Rights Foundation creates the case, such as a murder, assault with a deadly weapon or a school bombing.

Schools recieve case briefs complete with legal motions, witness statements and trial proceedings for the prosecution and defense. Each school is expected to represent both sides with four witnesses and a maximum of three attornies per side.

In 2011 and 2014, Cal’s team qualified for the state championships after winning the county title by going undefeated in the month-long competition.

Over the past four years, the team reached four straight championship trials while compiling a record of 31-5, including a 5-3 record at state. The team placed sixth at state in 2011, and 13th this year.

Model United Nations has always been a very successful club on campus, even before I was a member of the delegation.

Over the past four years, as a club we have won Best Club at Berkeley Model United Nations, one of the most prestigious conferences in the world, three out of the past four years.

In addition, we have regularly won Best Club at conferences such as Contra Costa County MUN as well as at UC Davis.

This year, I am extremely proud that our club has retaken the best club award at Stanford MUN against our main rival, Gunn High.

These achievements would not be possible without the dedication of my fellow board members: Ashton DeLano, Andrew Downs, Marnie Lowe, and Aditya Patil; and the talent and commitment of all our club members.

I want to especially acknowledge our adviser Mr. DeVries, who is an integral part to the success of our club. With continued commitment, I have no doubt that Cal High MUN will continue to grow and succeed.

NHS is a service based club whose efforts are directed toward improving Cal High’s learning environment and aiding the surrounding community.

NHS is primarily known on campus for the daily tutoring it offers during lunch as well as its involvement in other school wide events.

In the past, NHS has made holiday cards for soldiers serving in Iraq and has also held fundraisers for organizations such as Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital among others.

A club made entirely up of very hard working and well-rounded students, NHS looks to extend its helping hand even farther in the years to come.
