As we enter the new year, there are many trends being left behind in 2016.

It’s time to put away the sharpies, because “Instagram eyebrows” are out. This trend of over-lining and then completely filling in brows is being replaced by a more natural approach.

In the new technique, the brows are filled in with small hair-like strokes, and are not as harshly lined.

“Don’t draw boxy lines; it’s time for something new. Your brows can still be strong, but you want them to be soft, not harsh looking,” Kim Kardashian’s makeup artist, Mario Devivanoivc, told Cosmopolitan.

Contouring has also been on the decline. It reached its peak in 2016 with videos of makeup gurus sculpting everything from their necks to their legs using bronzer and highlight.

We saw a lot of examples of this at the  2017 Golden Globes, where many of the makeup looks featured less chiseled cheeks and more glowy features, a tribute to the rise in popularity of highlighter recently. Those of us who never had the time or patience to draw lines all over ourselves just to blend them into oblivion can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that this trend is over.

As for hair, we have recently seen a lot of light and unnatural shades, such as silvers, pastels, and bleach-blondes. But these are being swapped out for more easily achievable and maintainable looks.

These include warmer, softer blondes, and highlights that start farther down from the roots, so it is easier to go longer with no touch-ups, without looking grown-out.

One of the more popular colors is “bronde,” a mix of brown and blonde shades that has been seen on celebrities such as Cara Delevigne.

In the clothing and accessories categories, the holographic and rainbow themes are going out of style. The whimsical “unicorn” style of last year is losing popularity, which also means less colorful pastels and holographic accents. For those who can’t let go of these colorful trends, glitter and sparkles are still popular in the form of hair and face glitters.

Another trend that seems to have been forgotten is purse accessories. We all know purses are already accessories in themselves, but many of us still wanted to add another layer anyways by attaching fuzzy balls or tassels on our purses.

The slightly frightening trend of purses with faces is also over. As much as Fendi wanted us to love their bags that looked like monsters, the purse creatures and their cheaper rip-off counterparts are no longer in style.
