Nintendo is switching up gaming

The year 2017 has kicked off and Nintendo is switching it up again with their release of their latest console, the Nintendo Switch.

The bulky gamepad of the Wii U has changed into the new feature of what Nintendo is calling the Joy-Con, which allows users are able to switch between either one horizontal controller or two separate vertical ones.

Due to the Joy-Con and portable screen, players can take their controllers outside the house.

Games such as “1, 2, Switch” allow players to bring their controllers outside and enjoy multiplayer gameplay with other Switch users. This change and increase in mobility for the console could be the reason for the Switch’s success.

The Nintendo Switch has already broken Nintendo sales records in the first two days since release, according to The Verge, a tech news publication.

With the Wii having sold 600,000 units in the first two days, the Switch had crushed these numbers.

The new game “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” available to the Switch has become the biggest standalone launch title in Nintendo’s sales history, outperforming games such as the classic “Super Mario.”

“The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” has definitely been an impacting step forward for the Zelda series. This game now includes voice acting, crafting, and a true open world system, features never before implemented in any of the previous Zelda titles.

“I’m really loving how in the first part of the game, I can just explore and really absorb in all the stunning graphics and the expansiveness of the world,” said sophomore Josh Ferrer.

Having received 10 out of 10 stars on IGN’s review, “Breath of the Wild” is surely the game to get along with the Switch.

Launch titles for the Switch include “Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove”, “Just Dance 2017”, “1, 2, Switch”, “Snipperclips”, “Fast RMX”, “Super Bomberman”, and  “I am Setsuna”. All titles are available for purchase.

More popular titles that are confirmed but are yet to be released are “Skylanders Imaginators”, “Sonic Mania”, “Splatoon 2”, “Terraria”, “Ultra Street Fighter 2: The Final Challengers”, “Xenoblade 2”, Super Mario Odyssey”, “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe”, and “Fire Emblem Switch”.

But Some Cal students believe the $300 price tag might be a little too expensive for the new Nintendo console.

“I already have a PS4 and its game selection is vastly more expansive,” said junior Reece Lax.

Other students also are skeptical of the games and their compatibility with the Switch specific gameplay.

“A lot of the games probably won’t have a wide enough range in activities that could be useful on both the handheld and the larger screen versions,” said junior Kishan Dutt.

Neither student is considering purchasing the Nintendo Switch.

Many users believe the Switch is indeed a step in the right direction for Nintendo, while others who disagree argue it is just another ploy for Nintendo to increase their profits.

But Nintendo Switch sales statistics don’t lie. The Switch has been successful.
