Lip Sync stirs class spirits

A Cal High annual school-wide event, Lip Sync, is just around the corner.

Lip Sync is an event in which four spirited teams – one for each grade level – come up with creative choreography to a mash-up of many songs.

What can we expect from this year’s performances?

First up, the freshman chose the theme of “overplayed songs.”

“You can expect to see some late ‘90s goodness as well as some new music,” says freshman Dylan Costamagna.

The sophomores are going with a “one-hit-wonders” theme.

The juniors are taking on a movie theme, featuring songs from the likes of “Pitch Perfect,” “Anchorman,” and many more.

As for the seniors, they are hitting hard with YouTube hits, including “Gangnam Style,” Jenna Marbles, and Britney Spears’ “Gimme More.”

This event is not just about putting on a good show. Rivalries and competitive spirit run rampant among participants.

“We are here to win,” says Costamagna.

While Costamagna is in it to be the best, a senior threw a downright challenge on the table to the other teams.

“We’re very competitive,” said Lauren Holden, who will be performing with the senior team. “We’re definitely going to beat the juniors again this year.”

Not everyone is in it to win it. The point of the performance is to entertain the audience, but  junior team member Mindee Marek believes all the better if the performers enjoy the experience as well.

“I am really just doing this for fun,” says Marek.

But it’s not all fun and games. As Lip Sync comes closer and closer, the meetings are filled with intense choreographing and directing.

“Once you’re onstage, it’s worth all of the blood, sweat, and tears,” said sophomore Jessica Gonsalves.

No matter the drive for greatness, each team is working toward the goal of being their best by the night of the performance.

This year’s Lip Sync is on Wed., Feb. 27. Tickets cost $5 per person.
