A quick guide to the top Netflix picks

Nowadays, whenever anyone hears about a good TV show or movie, the first question that they will ask is, “Is it on Netflix?”

Since its launch in 2007, Netflix Internet streaming has arguably become the single most popular form of streaming television and movies online.

Netflix is constantly evolving and has been integrated into everyday household electronics, such as smartphones, tablets, computers, TVs and gaming consoles.

Those who want to get their TV fix instantly can turn to  Netflix because of its huge library of TV series and lack of annoying commercials.

These are the best shows on Netflix, sorted by genre.

Comedy:

“Arrested Development”

“Arrested Development” is the funniest show ever. It is about Michael Bluth, (Jason Bateman) taking over his family’s business after his father is imprisoned, and how the rest of his spoiled, dysfunctional family is making his job unbearable.

With fantastic acting by the likes of Will Arnett, David Cross, Michael Cera and Jessica Walter, as well as genius writing, it is truly a can’t-miss show. Unfortunately, FOX cancelled the show after three seasons.

Fortunately, it was put on Netflix, where it gained most of its popularity.  Netflix is even restoring it for a fourth season on May 26, which will be viewable only by Netflix users.

Runners-Up: “The Office” (U.S. & U.K. versions), “Parks and Recreation,” “Workaholics,” “30 Rock,” “Scrubs,” “Louie,” “Faulty Towers,” and “Saturday Night Live.”

Drama:

“Breaking Bad”

This was a difficult decision for me, as I have seen so many worthy contenders with this show on Netflix.

I chose “Breaking Bad” above other shows because it is the only show on Netflix that had me immersed in its world.

“Breaking Bad” tells the story of  a overqualified high school chemistry teacher, Walter White (Bryan Cranston) who, when diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, begins cooking the world’s highest quality methamphetamine to provide for his struggling family.

While the beginning may be slow and difficult to overcome, the complexity and intensity of the story line will keep viewers addicted.

Directed by Vince Gilligan, and with acting led by Cranston as Walter White,  Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman and Anna Gunn as Skyler White, it is a show that can be enjoyed by anyone who likes TV dramas.

Runners-Up: “Lost,” “Sons of Anarchy” and “Sherlock”

Science-Fiction/Fantasy:

“Battlestar Galactica”

Whenever I watch “Battlestar Galactica”  I  realize how ahead of its time it was.

The special effects and  production value are beyond good, considering it’s nearly ten years old.

The acting  is impeccable, and is led by Edward James Olmos as Commander William Adama, Mary McDonnell as President Laura Roslin, James Callis as Gaius Baltar and Jamie Bamber as Lee Adama.

The sound track for “Battlestar Galactica” is also another reason why I love this series. The intensity of the music mirrors that of “Inception” and fits the show perfectly.

Despite being set in the future, the show has timeless themes that draw viewers in such as right versus wrong, religion, and freedom.

Those who haven’t seen this show yet should definitely catch it on Netflix because of its flawless acting, perfectly-tailored music and amazing special effects.

Runners-Up: “Firefly,” “The Walking Dead” and “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”
