Girls face off on gridiron

There’s only one football game worth watching more than the Super Bowl, and it kicks off tomorrow: Cal High’s annual powder puff game.

The game will be played  at Ernie Berger Memorial Field at 4 p.m. Tickets are $5 with or without ASB.

The juniors are coming out with a big chip on their shoulder, wanting to show that they aren’t just going to roll over for the big bad seniors.

But the clear story line here is if the class of 2013 is going for their second straight win, which could be done for only the second time in school history.

“The seniors are going to dominate,” said senior Sara Lashano.

The seniors obviously enter the game as favorites, but each team has its share of superstar players.

The seniors will be bringing in last year’s quarterback, Jessica Catson, to lead their offense once again. She is a proven winner with a cannon arm capable of shredding an unsuspecting secondary. Her quickness can also be a factor to avoid pass-rushers or to even tuck the ball and run.

Lining up behind Catson will be either Marissa Rodriguez, or Kat Hupke. Both of these running backs come from a track background, so you can expect to see some serious quickness coming out of the backfield. Rodriguez was an instrumental part of the class of 2013’s huge upset last season.

“I just love to play football,” said Hupke.

The receiving core will consist of Morgan Gilfillan, Lena Koussa, and Lauren Holden. They will try to shake the junior’s cornerbacks and provide good targets for Catson. Each one of the receivers has the ability to get into space, and make a big play.

Holding the whole offense together has got to be the great offensive line led by Ceri Megan, Daniella Hernandez and Kelly Runyon. They are hoping to be able to handle the junior’s defensive line in order to open holes for the running backs, and give great blocking in the passing game.

These players, mixed with many other stars will hopefully provide some explosiveness for the seniors in this year’s game.

But winning a big game will take than just a high-powered offense. After all, it is defense that wins championships.

This year’s defense will be lead by Jennifer Gill, Alysha DeLange, Stephanie Smith, and Devon Haley. They are all returnees from last year’s victorious squad, so they know how to get the job done.

“I loved the way we felt after winning last year,” DeLange said.  “It was awesome and I’d love to do that again.”

The defense was able to contain last year’s seniors for the most part, and is looking for an equally stout performance this year.

“All of our linebackers were huge for us last year,” said senior coach Dan Hornett.

The seniors look pretty intimidating on paper, but the juniors hope to steal the show.

The juniors did not have a roster, or set positions at the time The Californian went to press, but that doesn’t mean certain players have people talking.

“We are going to have to watch out for Fina Toetuu,” said DeLange. “She is a beast, and super good at rugby.”

Not having a detailed scouting report on the class of 2014 could also play to the juniors advantage. When they step on the field the seniors won’t have any idea who could be the one to give the juniors a victory.

No matter who wins history will be made on Thursday. If the juniors get the win, it will be the first time in school history that the junior side has won two years in a row. And if the seniors are to remain undefeated, it will only be the second time in the 26-year history of the powder puff game that a graduating class has won twice.

Whatever the outcome, you’re in for a treat folks.
