Don’t look now, but just around the corner is summer, full of fun, relaxation, and extracurricular activities.
But a great summer has got to include a bomb playlist to listen to while lounging by the pool or on the beach. The Californian has compiled a list thanks to input from Cal High students, who provided some insights into what jams they’ll be repeatedly listening to this summer.
Summer is a time for students to unwind and have fun before the school year starts back up again. But each student has different goals during the two free months. A popular goal this summer for many students is to stay in shape through a sport or just working out.
Freshmen Naman Narang and Lono Morishita said this summer, they are committed to refining their skills in basketball and soccer so that they can be even better as sophomores next year.
“I just feel like I can get stuff done like work-wise and sports-wise,” Narang said.
Through this journey of finding their true athletic ability, Narang listens to songs that make him feel grounded and relaxed, such as “Love Is Only a Feeling” by Joey Bada$$.
This song is categorized as a jazz rap song, and the artist is known for his lyrical skills in the hip-hop scene.
Morishita said he goes for a more airy indie pop song, such as “Beaches” sung by Beabadoobee. It’s a perfect song while enjoying a warm sunset at the beach.
In Morshita’s case, he will be listening to it while on the soccer field enjoying the warmth of the sunset.
“I like how these songs can switch my mood quickly,” Morshita said.
Many high school students during this summer want to get on their academic grind and jump ahead or earn experience in a specific field. But this does not stop them from listening to summer jams while indoors.
Sophomore Koda Puth is one of the students who will experience this. She will be running her businesses and getting ready for the grueling year ahead.
Puth loves to play nostalgic songs to get her in the mood to lock in. Justin Bieber’s widely famous song, “Sorry,” is on her list of replays.
Puth won’t let the heat and stress bother her on her academic grind. She said she is still working on allocating her time to hang out with her friends.
“It’s important that I have a balance because I don’t want to burn out, so I try to have a little bit of fun and work,” Puth said.
When she’s not listening to “Sorry” she is hanging out with her friends and listening to the social media hit “Sunroof” by Nicky Youre & dazy.
For those who wonder what some of the graduates are doing with the freedom, many say that they are currently relishing the time that is left of their high school experience and trying to relax this summer.
Senior Maddie Hansen said that she’s planning to relax and hang with her friends until it’s time for her to leave for college.
Right now she’s listening to “Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line. It’s a 2012 hit country song that feels like tanning at the pool while listening.
Junior Logan Ramey is ready to leave the stressful schedule of being a junior and transition to his senior year.
He wants to spend this summer completely letting go of the academic mindset from the school year and just chill with his friends.
Ramey feels that his summer song is “1st Off” by DB.Boutatag, a hip-hop and rap song.
