No. 10: Woodstock Express, California’s Great America.
At No. 10, we’ve got Woodstock Express.
Yeah, we know it’s a kid’s coaster, but it earns a spot for being smooth and fun enough for people who aren’t into big rides. Plus, it’s a great warm up or a good one to ride with younger siblings.
Rating: speed 4, design 5.5, and thrills 4, Overall ride experience: 4.5.
No. 9: Sidewinder Safari, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom.
In ninth place is Sidewinder Safari. This ride is new and spins the car as it glides along the track. We know this sounds weird – and it is – but it’s also kind of fun. It’s more about laughs than screams, but if you like spinning rides, you’ll probably enjoy it.
Rating: speed 6, design 6.5, and thrills 6. Overall ride experience: 6.5.
No. 8: Psycho Mouse, California’s Great America.
Yeah, it’s not one of the most intense rides, but it’s got charm.
It’s a wild coaster, so you get all these sharp, jerky turns that make it feel like the car is about to fly off the track.
Rating: speed 6.5, design 7, thrills 6.5. Overall ride experience: 6.8.
No. 7: Boomerang, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom.
It’s a ride that basically does everything twice – once forward, once backward.
You go through a couple of loops, reach the end of the track, then do it all again in reverse.
The ride is short and a bit dated, but still a good time.
Rating: speed 7, design 7.5, and thrills 7.5. Overall ride experience: 7.3.
No. 6: Flight Deck, California’s Great America.
It’s an older inverted coaster, but it still holds up.
Your legs dangle the whole time while you twist through loops and corkscrews, and the g-forces are stronger than you’d expect. It’s a solid, classic ride.
Rating: speed 7.5, design 8, and thrills 8. Overall ride experience: 8.
No. 5: Superman: Ultimate Flight, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom.
This ride is short, but it delivers a lot in just 45 seconds.
It launches you straight up a spiral, flips you backwards at the top, and then drops you in reverse.
Going up, you twist like Superman taking flight, then you flip completely backwards at the top, all to zoom back toward Earth on a near-perfect drop. The incredibly long line speaks for the ride’s success itself, a near-perfect ride for something quite quick.
The theming is awesome too, with a cool Superman vibe.
Rating: speed 9, design 8.5, and thrills 8. Overall ride experience: 8.3.
No. 4: Gold Striker, California’s Great America.
It starts with a tunnel launch that honestly feels like a punch to the face (in a fun way), and from there it’s non-stop rattling action. You feel every bump and turn, which is kind of the point with wooden coasters.
Rating: speed 8, design 8 and thrills 8.5. Overall ride experience: 8.5.
No. 3: The Joker, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom.
This ride is just weird in the best way possible.
It’s part wood, part steel, and totally unpredictable.
There are tons of airtime, sudden turns, and moments where you feel like the ride is just messing with you.
Rating: speed 8, design 9, and thrills 9. Overall ride experience: 8.8.
No. 2: RailBlazer, California’s Great America.
This one’s smaller than some of the others, but don’t let that fool you.
With its single rail design, the rides feel super intense and really personal, like you’re riding on a beam with nothing around you.
The drops are sharp, the turns are tight, and it doesn’t let up.
Rating: speed 8.5, design 9.5 (because that single rail is just so cool), and thrills 9. Overall ride experience: 9.
No. 1: Medusa, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom.
Named after one of Greek mythology’s most iconic figures, Medusa offers an intense and captivating experience just like the tale.
This ride is perfect for people who want to have a rush of adrenaline, showing off its max speed of 65 mph and coveted 150 foot drop.
This ride looks like a long green snake, with many loops that will get your stomach turning for sure.
This coaster is no joke. It’s also a floorless ride, so your feet dangle the whole time, which adds to the fear.
The speed feels relentless, and the massive vertical loop is a standout.
This coaster is easily seen from the park, its size demanding respect.
But don’t worry, if you can’t see the coaster, you’ll hear the screams of regretful riders confronting the consequences of their own decisions.
Rating: speed 9, design 9.5, and thrills 9.5. Overall ride experience: 9.5.
So that’s our top 10.
Whether you’re in it for the intense drops, weird spins, or something fun and different, there’s a ride on this list for you. And the best part is they’re all in the Bay Area.
You may just want to wait until after the rides to grab lunch.
