Lip Sync heats up class rivalry

Lip Sync has been a fun and exciting tradition at Cal High for many years, and 2015 is going to keep the tradition going strong.

Lip Sync is a competition between the classes to see who can lip sync best to a variety of songs that all revolve around a specific theme.

They create dances and sometimes skits to perform as they lip sync to the songs.

A panel of teachers from Cal judges the performances. After both of the shows, the teachers vote for their favorite performances.

Whichever class gets the most votes, wins. This will also be the first year that the winning class will earn spirit points.

There will be two show times for Lip Sync tomorrow. The first show will be at 5 p.m. with tickets costing $3, and the second show will be held at 7 p.m. Tickets for this later show will cost $5.

All tickets are solid at the door.

“Spirit points” is a new concept this year that was started in an effort to bring more spirit to Cal.

The class with the most people in attendance will also win spirit points.

The class with the most spirit points at the end of the school year will get a pool party.

Last year, the class of 2015 won with the theme Saturday Night Live, where they lip-synced along with some memorable SNL skits as well as songs from the hit late night show.

The class of 2017’s theme was boy bands, 2016’s was fitness, and the class of 2014’s was Disney.

This year’s themes sound equally entertaining.

The freshmen will do “Childhood Gone Wrong,” focusing on the then-and-nows of past Disney and Nickelodeon stars.

“It’ll be a hilarious and risqué performance that is sure to have the whole theater rolling on the ground laughing,” said freshman Jordan Limesand.

The sophomores are going with an “Animals” theme. The information is “confidential” for the time being, said sophomore Taylor Bannister.

The juniors will follow up last year’s performance with the theme “Places,” choosing songs that have to do with famous and memorable destinations all around the world.

“Our mix tape is straight fire,” said junior Dylan Costamagna. “You can expect it to be a very emotional performance.”

Lastly, the class of 2015 will do “Schools,” a theme that could possibly bring them another win.

They got the idea while brainstorming one day, and the moment the theme was brought up, the seniors knew it would be a good one.

It was unique and something they could put an interesting twist on.

“We have a lot of different songs and skits, from the ABC’s to High School Musical,” said senior Jessica Gonsalves. “I can guarantee that the Senior Lip Sync will be a show to remember.”

The class of 2015 won last year with a mixture of songs and skits, so there is a high chance that this combination could help them win again.

Gonsalves is confident that they will win two years in a row.

“Seniors [will win], of course!” said Gonsalves. “Our theme is the most unique, and we are going to bring some creative fun to the stage.”
