Singing valentines

Singing+valentines

ough the halls. Singing Valentines are coming.

Cal High’s chamber choir is going classroom door to door next week, singing love songs to students.

“[It is] a project designed to bring the cheesiness of love to the campus,” said Nick Patton, choir director and AP music theory teacher.

Students can buy a singing Valentine for their friends or sweetheart until today, and small groups of choir students will deliver them on Feb. 13.

Each singing group will dress according to a love-based theme, such as cheesy love, burning love, all you need is love, or the power of love.

“I think it’s super fun and it’s a great way to get the choir known and out there,” said senior Emily England.

The idea was modeled after a similar projects Patton had done at other schools. He decided to bring it to Cal this year.

“It is a great way to see what we do [in choir] in a personalized manner,” Patton said.

Students hope the singing Valentines bring more exposure to the choir department.

“I think it’s fun and I think it’s a way for the Cal High community to learn and become more exposed to choir,” said senior Asha Ray-Chaudhuri.

Added senior Maren Callaway, “I think it’s a really great way to showcase the choral program at Cal.”

Patton also hopes that the project gives the general populous a look at the choir department and helps the choir learn as well.

“[It is] a super great project for the students as well because they come out with a lot of individual accountability,” he said.

Patton noted that he thinks the choir’s talent and ability focus this year are finally able to handle the project. But he isn’t the only one excited about the singing Valentines. The choir students are on board as well.

“It’s a bit ambitious but hopefully a lot of fun,” junior Logan Schluntz said. “It’s been a lot of fun working independently with my friends.”

The project gives the students a chance to sing music they want and work with their peers.

“I really enjoy it because I get to spend time with my small group, and get to do more songs that I like,” said sophomore Alexis Rauba.

Added Callaway, “It’s been really fun to be able to find our own music and work independently in small groups.”

So prepare for some sweet love songs next week.

And if you’re pining for more, there is a Valentines choir concert, featuring all four choirs on Feb 15 in the theater.
