Cal parent poses possible solution to closed campus

Editor – As a parent of a Cal High freshman, I read the recent articles in the Cal High paper with interest.

The closed campus seems to be a source of contention and I hope the school finds a solution soon to meet the students desire for variety during lunch while also satisfying the school’s interest in their safety.

I am first questioning why there is only one lunch period to accommodate the entire school?

My daughter is forced to bring her lunch each day, not because she feels the food is bad, but she would need to spend her lunch period waiting in line.

I also understand the kids need to sit anywhere there is space available because the seniors occupy the only tables.

If there were at least two lunch periods, possibly three, there would seem to be less confusion, less waiting in line, and more areas for students to sit and enjoy the lunch period.

Secondly, I can understand from the students point of view that going off campus to eat lunch provides variety of food and an opportunity when bringing their lunch from home was not an option.

Could the school allow local food trucks to bring hot food to the school to be purchased during their lunch hours?  Could Cal High partner with the local pizza chain, sandwich shop, ethnic delicatessen to bring pre-packaged foods to the school to offer something the students want?

Subway is currently offered at Cal High during lunch periods, however with the vast number of students to serve all at one time, one sandwich shop isn’t working.

Give the students a reason to want to stay and eat at Cal High during lunch.
