Lone Star State becomes loner

Texans want to secede from US

Since the dawn of time man has tried to unravel the mystery as to why Texas has this never-ending desire to secede from the Union.

The newest movement to secede has been headed by Daniel Miller, a sixth generation Texan. He is the head of The Texas Nationalist Movement (TNM), which has been fighting for independence for more than a decade.

The TNM has a simple goal:  separate entirely from the Union and be its own independent entity. While the TNM website has laid out a list of eight major reasons to secede, it can be summarized simply with the idea that D.C. has been screwing Texans long enough and the state can do a better job itself.

After putting it in such simple terms, I am starting to agree with these Texans.

According to the website, fewer than 290,000 people have declared their support of the movement. But the website indicates TNM is committed to identifying 5 million supporters.

With some simple math one can see that the TNM is a long way from its goal.

While 290,000 may seem like a lot of people, it’s roughly 1 percent of  Texas’s  26.96  million population.

In this day and age anything can gain support. I’m sure I could start a movement to abolish seedless watermelons in California or ban all representations of He-Man. With the help of the Internet, I could get more than 290,000 people to support me.

I mean, how do you plant a watermelon without seeds and how are little kids supposed to live up to those unrealistic body standards set by over-muscular action figures?

It is also important to point out that Texas can’t simply leave the Union.

After the bloodbath of the Civil War, it was made very clear that the federal government would have the final say in any secession decisions.

But if Texas is hell-bent on secession and the federal government wants to stop it, the government better bring one thing, a good supply of body bags.

But the TNM’s lack of support and an easy way to reach its goal does not mean we should discredit these Texans as crazy.

Just go to any corner of the US and you will find like minded people, who prove the TNM’s message is clear and shared across the country.

With the “Brexit” movement in full swing and showing the possibilities of freedom, all 50 states have started their own independence movements with varying success.

With the US government  system in one of its darkest eras (ex: literally everything happening right now) it is not hard to see how people in all corners of the nation would want to leave behind all the corruption, debt, and general dark cloud haunting US politics recently.

Surprisingly, included in these 50 states is, the “cobalt blue” California.

The Yes California Independence Campaign, as it is now called, is headed by Louis Marinelli.

Their goal is to qualify a proposition so Californians can go to the polls in 2020 and vote on leaving the Union.

People of California, how can we let this happen? We must maintain our pro-government views even when the system has failed us time and time again.

We have, for a substantial time, been a Liberal Democratic state, and we must keep it that way.

Change has no place in California!

Oh, I’m sorry, it seems my illogical side just took over.

While it is all too easy to discredit and ridicule movements with few followers, as many people do, these Texans are not simply a bunch of crazy rednecks. Their goals may seem radical to the general populace but they’re motives are grounded in sound reasoning.

With recent secession movements seeming to already be standing on weak legs, their impact and role lies not in success but in stirring things up and awakening people.

With too many misdirected political movements, we turn to the great words of Otter from the inspiring film, “Animal House:” “I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody’s part!”
