New Frank Ocean album definitely worth the wait

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Frank Ocean’s new album, soaring on the music charts.

Last month, the mysterious R&B artist finally released his long-awaited  album, “Blonde,” which is Ocean’s first release in four years.

Upon its release, “Blonde” topped the Billboard 200 chart and was the third largest debut of 2016 behind Drake’s “Views” and Beyonce’s “Lemonade”.

The way Ocean released his album was just as unique as his music. He used clever tactics to hype up the album and kept fans on their toes.

Fans have spent the past four years yearning for Ocean’s next  project after his debut album“Channel ORANGE”.The response for “Channel ORANGE” was positive enough to keep Ocean from fading.

Over the entire course of his absence the media blew up with countless jokes about their impatience with the artist.

Rumours of the album release all started on August. 1. When Ocean, someone who seemingly disappeared off the face of the Earth, instantly caught attention.

When Ocean uploaded his first livestream, havoc wrecked all over social media. Fans went ballistic over his sudden posts of livestreams.

At first, the livestreams consisted of hours of footage of his garage or the singer tinkering away. Everyday, for two weeks, he livestreamed himself  building an unidentifiable structure while not speaking and just a soft tune of a song playing in the background. This was revealed to be teasers for his upcoming album.

By the second week, viewers interpreted the structure of stairs, a symbol for the making of the album. Viewers took to social media to recognize that the video represented his path leading up to his album.

The album, which was finally released on Aug. 20, consists of 15 songs along with two interludes of conversation that creates a more personal and intimate atmosphere.

With a relaxing ambiance, “Blonde” is a perfect listen to unwind on late nights or to create a calm atmosphere.

His songs have minimal beats and some are instrumental. But Ocean’s voice is the main instrument as he layers his vocals and harmonizes with himself to create a variety of different sounds within his songs.

Ocean’s lyrics touch on heartbreak, loss of innocence, and drug usage through artistic language that present many underlying and repeating motifs.

Most of the songs on the album discuss somber events. He includes his struggles with his past relationships and personal issues.

In the background his lyrics also embrace pain and accept events or emotions he cannot control.

There are lines in many of his songs that pay respect to his mother. People who have passed on, and past loved ones. This can be seen in “Nikes,” where Ocean tributes the deceased in lines: “Pour up for A$AP/RIP Pimp C/RIP Trayvon…” and “Kiss the Earth that birthed you” referring to his mother in song “Pink + White.”

Ocean even mocks love by showing that with happiness comes destruction.

His killer feature list on his album has many different artists from a variety of musical genres. Some of his collaborations include The Beatles’ Paul McCartney on “Futura Free” and “Seigfried,” and Beyonce on “Pink + White.” Rappers Kendrick Lamar, Yung Lean, Kanye West, and Tyler the Creator have all contributed to Ocean’s songs, either producing it or making an appearance.

The diversity of the featured artists adds to  the versatility of his songs, each a bit different than the last.

“Blonde” sweeps listeners off their feet despite its easygoing instrumentals and relaxed vocals. Carrying the popularity of his first album, “Channel ORANGE,” Ocean does not disappoint.
