Be a men’s style virtuoso

Leave your cargo shorts and snapbacks at home. It’s time for comfy sweaters and warm scarves.

This fall, fashion critics on details.com point to cuffed pants, tweed coats, and statement scarves as the top trends for men for the season.

Statement scarves are scarves that are worn to contrast with a particular outfit. They can be worn as bold and functional accessories or as colorful accents.

Knit scarves can be bundled up and wrapped around the neck to keep the wearer warm.

Small, square scarves can be knotted to add a bit of excitement to any gloomy-colored outfit.

Cuffed pants with a playful pattern on the inside add life to foggy fall mornings.

Junior Matthew Yeung, pulling from the styles of YouTube vloggers Tyler Oakley and Troye Sivan, likes to wear cuffed pants during the fall.

Yeung prefers this sophisticated yet casual style over frumpy hoodies and baggy sweatpants.

Baggy pants are a look that most agree is not a good look for men.

“The bagginess makes their legs look short,” said Yeung.

English teacher Ted Levey hates the baggy style and insists that male students learn how to properly use a belt.

“Please do not wear the belt-under-the-butt-cheek look,” said Levey. “Pull up your pants and care about your hair.”

Junior Vincent Egawa, who is highly influenced by Japanese fashion, can be spotted sporting a colorful, preppy look on any given day of the year.

His style is very unique with bowties and brightly colored pants. He describes his look as overdressed while pleasing to the eye, but he advises others to take the less-is-more path.

“You want to dress presentably but not overdressed,” said Egawa.

Egawa has many fashion tips for guys looking to liven up their wardrobes.

“If you’re short, dress tall, and vice versa,” said Egawa. “If you’re short, try to stay away from cuffed pants because they create breaks in the flow of your clothes, causing you to look shorter than you actually are.”

Heavy knits are really good for the cooler temperatures if students are looking to experiment with textures. The appearance of the material gives a three dimensional feel to their outfits.

Boots are great if students are going for a relaxed military look or if they just want to put a pep in their step.

They’re fun, fashionable, and perfect for the rainy season so that sneakers don’t get wet and soggy. And there are so many different kinds.

Chukkas are a descendant of the classic polo boot. Wear these with a solid button down shirt and single-cuffed jeans.

If men want to take a risk and dust off their old cowboy boots for the season, they can put a modern spin on them by pairing them with a plain or plaid Oxford shirt, straight or boot cut jeans, and a tweed sport-coat.

As much as guys might want to show off their boots, they should avoid tucking their jeans into them. They don’t want to look like they just stepped out of a ’60s Spaghetti Western.

Combat boots are casual while still being trendy and pair well with tucked in skinny or narrow leg jeans.

Try not to wear these boots with baggy jeans, especially untucked ones, because they will add weight towards the bottom of the outfit and will make the wearer look like a giant pear.

Sweaters are a warm and comfortable option for any autumn day. They come in a variety of styles and colors.

Graphic cardigans add fun flair to any outfit with prints varying from tribal to hipster cats.  Pair this with a v-neck or a collared shirt and for some extra flair, add a muted-colored bowtie with polka dots.

Varsity cardigans with contrasting colors are perfect for a classic sporty look. Pair this with a pair of chucks and a T-shirt for a quick and easy outfit.

Tweed coats are very popular according to esquire.com. They are easy to wear by pairing them with button down shirts.

“I love wearing plaid with tweed,” said Levey.

Colors are a good way to spruce up any muddy-colored outfit.

“Students need to dress so that their colors match,” said math teacher Fred Albano. “Try to use a little bit more color because fall clothing is a drabby kind of look, so bring in some spring and summer colors.”

English teacher Sean King pointed out Egawa as the men’s fashion guru from the junior class.

“Vincent is a delight because he always has a great combination of colors and fabrics,” said King. “He always surprises you with bold combinations.”

Albano recommends for students to change up their wardrobe for the fall.

“Don’t wear the same shirt and pants combination every day,” said Albano.

Girls also have fashion advice for boys at Cal.

“In autumn you should have the clothing of a distinguished middle-aged man,” junior Raz Mostaghimi said, “but the heart of a boy who just carved his first pumpkin.”
