This summer, movie theaters are preparing for packed houses, viral reactions and some of the biggest releases audiences have seen in years.
From sequels to action- packed new releases, the 2026 summer is already generating excitement among movie fans. As trailers spread online and release dates get closer, students are debating which films will dominate theaters this year.
Here’s what are expected to be three of the top summer blockbusters.
“Toy Story 5”
“Toy Story 5” is an upcoming animated film by Pixar and Walt Disney Pictures that continues the story of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the rest of the toys featured throughout the famed franchise.
The movie is directed by Andrew Stanton, who also worked on “Finding Nemo” and “WALL-E”, and is produced by Lindsey Collins. The film is scheduled to be released on June 19.
The story focuses on the toys struggling to compete with modern technology after an eight year old girl, Bonnie, becomes attached to a tablet named Lilypad instead of her traditional toys.
Returning voice actors include Tom Hanks as Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear.
Fans are especially excited to see the return of the classic Toy Story characters from earlier movies.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day”
“Spider Man: Brand New Day” is an upcoming Marvel and Sony superhero film that continues Peter Parker’s story after the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
The movie is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously directed “Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” and is produced by Kevin Feige, Avi Arad, and Amy Pascal. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 31.
The movie stars Tom Holland as Spider-Man and his real-life partner, Zendaya, as MJ. Jacob Batalon. Sadie Sink and John Bernthal also join the cast.
The story follows Peter Parker as he adjusts to living in a world where nobody remembers him from “No Way Home.”
As Peter focuses on protecting New York alone, new threats begin to appear throughout the city.
“I’m really excited for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ to come out because I’ve always really loved the Spider-Man movies,” freshman Emily Wada said.
Many students are eager for the latest Marvel blockbuster.
“I’m most excited for ‘Spiderman Brand New Day,’ because the franchise is really popular and the edits for it are really cool,” freshman Taylor Vasquez said.
The film has already gained major attention online because fans are excited to see Spider-Man return after a long break and are curious about how the story connects to future Marvel movies.
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” was released in December 2021.
“Some students believe sequels are still entertaining despite how common they have become,” freshman Melvin Namai said. “Sequels are really good.”
“Minions and Monsters”
“Minions and Monsters” is an upcoming animated comedy film connected to the popular Minions franchise. It is being produced by Illumination and distributed by Universal Pictures. The film will be released in theaters on July 1.
The story is expected to follow the Minions as they encounter mysterious monsters during another adventure filled with funny moments and action.
The movie continues Illumination’s style of family friendly humor that made the “Despicable Me” and “Minions” movies successful world wide.
By introducing new creatures and a different setting, the movie adds a fresh twist to the familiar Minion formula while still keeping the fast paced humor the movies are known for.
With major franchises, live action remakes, and long awaited sequels releasing throughout the season, summer 2026 is shaping up to be an important year for movies. From superhero films like “Spiderman: Brand New Day” to family movies such as “Minions and Monsters” and “Toy Story 5” audiences will have a wide variety of films to choose from.
As trailers continue to get fans excited for a fresh set of films, these movies are expected to become some of the biggest entertainment events of the summer, making it memorable for everyone tuning in.
