The 2025-26 NBA season has already been plagued by allegations of corruption, fraud and misconduct.
And the season just tipped off a few weeks ago.
The NBA faces a pervasive situation where an increasing number of players and a coach are accused of being involved in sports betting and “no-show” endorsements.
Recently, Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard was accused of signing a deal with Aspiration, a disconnected banking and investment company, that promised Leonard $28 million and additional stock in their company, according to ESPN.
Leonard signed a three-year, $150 million contract with the Clippers to help keep the team below the team’s luxury tax threshold of $188 million. To circumvent the luxury tax, Clippers owner Steve Ballmer allegedly funneled $50 million into Aspiration, which then paid Leonard to “no-show.”
This enabled the Clippers to avoid luxury tax penalties. If an NBA investigation finds the allegations are true, Leonard’s contract would be voided.
Without Leonard, the Clippers would face significant challenges, as he provides a crucial blend of offensive and defensive skills that elevate the team to a championship contender when healthy.
A dominant small forward, Leonard provides versatile scoring, combined with his elite perimeter defense, high basketball IQ, and ability to deliver clutch performances.
If Leonard’s contract is voided, the Clippers would lack an effective defense, which would result in a worse performance than what they are currently experiencing.
Leonard isn’t alone.
Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier were also arrested on suspicion of fraud, gambling, and money laundering.
Rozier is accused of illegal sports betting, allegedly selling information to NBA betting websites that he would leave games early.
Billups is accused of being involved in an illegal poker ring that allegedly used innovative, high-technology equipment to help his group win, according to ESPN.
It’s unfortunate that the NBA’s extensive problem involving gambling is impacting the atmosphere of the game and distracting from some already great storylines that have developed early this season.
