New clubs cover wide interests

Cal High is full of new and interesting clubs for students with a wide array of interests.

Here are a few that stand out in the crowd.

Glee Club
If you love singing, dancing, and performing, then make your way over to the Glee Club.

Glee Club President Cheyenne Dewey has teamed up with biology teacher Andrew White to create a club for those interested in singing and dancing. While Dewey was inspired by the TV show “Glee,” this club is a performance club rather than a fan club for the hit show.

“The group is primarily an outlet for people who want to do choral singing but don’t have room in their schedule for choir,” said White, the club’s adviser.

Dewey approached White last year to see if he would be the adviser for the club, and he agreed. White has sung in various choirs and has performed classical for about the last 10 years.

In fact, Dewey said White was one of the factors that inspired her to create the club.

“Mr. White taught us tricks on singing,” said Dewey. “We would go in the stairwell and sing and there would be echoes. It was really cool.”

Senior Rizelle Dizon has a passion for singing and is happy to be a part of the club.

“I’m very excited because we sound good, we’ve been uniting for a couple of weeks, and we have a lot of talented members,” said Dizon. “And Mr. White’s a beast.”

The club’s official name is “The Key of Ursa Major,” a play on words by White. The “key” has to do with music, and “Ursa Major” is a constellation, which represents the club, as it is full of stars.

The members receive sheet music then go over and practice the songs during the meetings. Various songs were chosen over the summer, which the club members will learn and sing throughout the year.

The Glee Club performed for the first time on Oct. 26 at the homecoming rally.

The genres they sing will include pop songs that most people recognize.

For students looking for a place to practice performance skills, meetings are held every Monday and Wednesday in Room S-6.

“It’s our first year and we’re doing our best with a lot of different things,” said White. “Hopefully everyone will have a good experience with this.”

Zumba Le Jazz Club

One of the fastest growing dance-fitness styles, Zumba, is coming to Cal via the new Zumba Le Jazz Club, which is led by freshman Sofie Bingham. Bingham said she was inspired to create the club after going to a Zumba class with her friend around a year ago.

“We thought it was fun and I wanted to bring it to Cal,” said Bingham.

Zumba is a style of dance that is a combination of dance and exercise. Its steps are Latin-inspired and are put to catchy, up-beat, and mostly Latin songs.

Students don’t need any training or skills to take part in the club. At the meetings, members learn new steps and choreography, and then practice them to the fun and contagious music.

Bingham hopes that while everyone is dancing and working out, students will be motivated to try their best.

“The goal is for everyone to have fun, try some new moves, and get fit,” said Bingham.

Meetings take place in the dance room on Fridays from 3-4 p.m. for those students interested in joining the fun.

Movie Appreciation Club

Students who have ever been out of the loop when it comes to movies and entertainment no longer need to worry, because the Movie Appreciation Club will help them brush up on their cinema knowledge.

Club president, junior Nick Fajardo, founded the club because movies are a popular topic among him and his friends. Since he enjoys motion pictures so much, he decided to create a place where other movie lovers could come together.

“I want to help people experience movies they wouldn’t normally see,” said Fajardo.

At the club gatherings, the members plan dates and times for their next movie viewing.

Anyone can suggest a movie, and Fajardo is open to all genres. At the club meetings not only do they plan their next outing, but they also talk about different careers and aspects of film.

In addition to watching movies, Fajardo hopes the club will attend various events such as film festivals and classes.

“We’ve looked on the DVC (Diablo Valley College) website for film classes and hopefully we can get everyone to go,” said Fajardo.

The Movie Appreciation Club meets every other Tuesday in Room 325.

Quill Club

Artists and lovers of literature are invited to join the new Quill Club.

The Quill Club was started because club president junior Nina Herrera Merkur wanted an ideal place where art and literature could come together. As an artist and literature-lover herself, Herrera

Merkur wanted to combine an art club and a book club with an emphasis on drawing.

“We talk about and enjoy 2-D ink-based art,” said Herrera Merkur.

Since the club acknowledges various subjects such as drawing, writing, reading, and poetry, it is easily relatable to anyone who is a fan of illustrative and literary works.

A weekly theme is voted upon and assigned and the members can either draw or write about that particular topic. In addition, a book is selected monthly for the club participants to read and discuss.

The club also has a website where the club’s artists and writers can have their work published. Everyone submits their work and Herrera Merkur chooses which pieces will appear on the website.

“I think everyone can have a lot of fun with it,” said Herrera Merkur.

Students looking to join the club should attend meetings on Thursdays and Fridays in Room 312.
