Mr. Cali approaches

As the sun starts to shine and flowers begin to bloom, the senior guys of Cal High begin to choose their pageant attire, practice their routines, and perfect their talents in hopes of winning the prestigious title of Mr. California on April 4.

A unique Cal tradition, Mr. Cali is a pageant competition between 13 handsome seniors. Each boy represents a month of the year, and one represents the leap year.

Not only is the annual event pure entertainment, but it also gives the student body a chance to bid on each contestant.

The senior who wins the most bids is crowned Mr. California.

“When I think of Mr. Cali, I think of a guy with a tan, nice hair and who is proud, yet approachable,” said senior Deanna Pearson.

This pageant gives the seniors involved the opportunity to act, dance, sing, reveal their special talent, and show off their style.

Throughout the course of the competition, the boys must perform three dances and a skit, in addition to modeling in a runway show.

“I plan on practicing a ton,” said senior Jake Hoyt. “As much as possible.”

It isn’t all fun and games to participate in this glorious event. The boys of the show go through careful consideration when being chosen.

Each willing senior must fill out several questions about themselves, write a short autobiography, and submit teacher recommendations, which are all taken in to consideration when selecting the contestants.

The pageant is equally intense in competition.

Being such a highly acknowledged title, the competitors are willing to do just about anything to win the crown.

“It would mean the world to me if I won,” said senior Jack Farina. “Like the whole world. Like seriously.”

Not only is this one of the last school wide activities for seniors to bond over, but an opportunity to provide a role model for underclassmen.

“I feel that Mr. Cali is an inspiration to us all,” said junior Jacob Lundahl. “It gives me hope that one day I could be that great!”

The tradition of Mr. Cali, which first began in 2001, allows the students to enjoy an end of the year event and the most eligible men of the school to be put on display.

The show will take place in the Cal theater, providing the contestants with the entire stage to strut on and enough seats to hold the massive amount of bidding students.
Don’t miss the show on April 4th! Tickets are $5 with ASB and $10 without.
