AP Biology teacher Andrew White used his singing talents to raise money for the school’s science department in his third annual charity concert titled White Noise on May 29.

White, who sang for two years with the San Francisco Opera, performed various European and American opera songs in the Cal theater for an audience that included students, teachers and parents.

“I think it came out alright,” White said after the show. “It’s difficult singing a recital like this when I had to talk all day.”

The event was organized and run by Cal’s White Noise club, led by seniors Cody Heally, Kristin Foster, and Shaylin Higgins.

Proceeds from the two-hour performance will go toward fixing broken equipment in the science department. The concert raised about $500.

“All these funds go to helping students find out if they are passionate about it (science), too,” said Heally, who was in White’s class and plans to study biology at Azusa Pacific in the fall.

The club was started three years ago by a group of students, and has been dedicated to orga-nizing the concert every spring with the help of White.

“I like the opportunity to perform,” said White. “It also allows me to help out the department and gives students a chance to direct, organize and perform in a concert.”

White was joined on the stage for a duet by choir teacher Lucerne Mottaz, and the glee club, named the Key of Ursa Major, which he advises.

Seniors Adhitya Mohan and Natalie Oberhauser-Lim also performed a duet of the song “In the End” by Linkin Park at the concert.

The night concluded with White’s rendition of classic Disney songs, such as “Under the Sea” from “The Little Mermaid,” earning him a standing ovation from the audience.

“Mr. White is the bomb,” said Mohan. “He is so good.”

Overall, the audience had rave reviews for White’s performance.

“I don’t know much about opera, but I would definitely go see one after this,” said parent Sarah Fisch, who accompanied her son, junior Cameron Fisch, one of White’s students, to the show. “He’s got a beautiful voice, very soothing.”
