January marks return of award shows

Every year, millions of Americans are eager to see their favorite names in entertainment win big. This year’s award season kicked off to a great start on Jan. 8 with the 40th Annual People’s Choice Awards.

This awards show has always been popular because fans can choose the winners by voting online, unlike other shows such as the Oscars or Grammys.

With so many popular nominees this year, fans logged on every day to make sure their favorite nominee took home the award.

The event featured 58 awards within three main categories of music, television, and film. This year, the show was hosted by Beth Behrs and Kat Dennings, actresses from the CBS sitcom “2 Broke Girls.”

The music category was perhaps the most competitive of this awards show. With so many big names, anyone could have taken home the prize.

Britney Spears won her first ever People’s Choice award for Favorite Pop Artist, beating out competitors Katy Perry and Justin Timberlake.

But Timberlake proved to be one of the biggest winners of the night, earning Best Album (“The 20/20 Experience”), Favorite R&B Artist, and Favorite Male Artist.

Demi Lovato ended up with Favorite Female Artist and Favorite Music Fan Following for her loyal fanbase, known as “Lovatics.”

The category Favorite Breakout Artist celebrates emerging pop stars like Ariana Grande, Austin Mahone, Icona Pop, Imagine Dragons, and Lorde. Lorde seemed to be the most likely to win with her hit single, “Royals.” However, Ariana Grande surprised viewers by taking the gold.

A couple other notable winners in the music category were Taylor Swift (Favorite Country Artist) and One Direction (Favorite Band).

Sandra Bullock dominated the Movie Category, with a total of six nominations for her starring roles in “The Heat” and “Gravity.” Amazingly, Bullock won every award for which she was nominated.

Favorite Movie seemed to be a battle of franchise films with “Despicable Me 2,” “Fast and Furious 6,” “Iron Man 3,” “Monsters University,” and “Star Trek: Into Darkness” pitted against each other for the big award.

The final award went to “Iron Man 3.”

A few other winners in the film category include “The Conjuring” (Favorite Horror Movie), Adam Sandler (Favorite Comedic Movie Actor, “Grown Ups 2”), and “The Heat,” (Favorite Comedic Movie).

Many fan favorites were winners in the television category this year, including “The Walking Dead” (Favorite TV Drama), “Psych” (Favorite Cable TV Comedy), and “American Horror Story” (Favorite TV Movie/Mini-Series).

“Glee” led the list of nominees with eight nominations, including Favorite Network TV Comedy. This award ended up going to “The Big Bang Theory,” but “Glee” still won Favorite Comedic TV Actor (Chris Colfer).

One anticipated category was Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show. Nominees included well-loved shows “Supernatural,” “Once Upon a Time,” “Vampire Diaries,” and “The Walking Dead.” But newcomer “Beauty and the Beast” took home the prize.

The night was filled with live music from chart-topping artists. Although Sara Bareilles’ vocals were weak as she sang her hit tune “Brave,”  Brad Paisley and OneRepublic stole the show with amazing performances.

This year’s People’s Choice Awards was filled with good laughs and a mix of predictable and surprising winners. It was a great way to kick off 2014’s awards season.
