As the 11th month of the second Trump administration comes to an end, outrage has been voiced about the way ICE has been weaponized against the people.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), has been issuing and enforcing deportations across California and the United States. These mass deportations are wrong and violate people’s right to due process, which is protected by the Constitution.
According to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement website, ICE was founded after the 9/11 attack as part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for national security. But more recently, it has been used as Trump’s personal stick to beat immigrants with.
In late October, DHS reported that more than 527,000 people had been deported and 2 million have left the country. The Trump administration said they would be deporting undocumented immigrants, especially those with criminal records.
But that claim is a lie. According to NBC, ICE has only arrested or deported 6% of known immigrant murderers.
The Trump administration claims they are making progress and breaking records with immigration deportations, but the only thing that they’re breaking is due process and a fair system.
According to the ICE website, agents can make arrests in public without a warrant if they think they have reason to do so. In public, they can arrest, search and seize anyone if they believe the person is in the U.S. unlawfully.
If students at Cal High are worried about their safety from ICE on campus, there is a procedure.
Principal Demitrius Ball and the superintendent will be notified of any agents arrive on campus. Unless they have a warrant, the agents cannot disrupt the campus, as protected under the Constitution.
But who knows what that means since ICE’s website is filled with contradictory statements. It states that everyone gets due process, but Trump said in an interview with NBC journalist Kristen Welker he doesn’t know about due process, and he isn’t a lawyer.
Due process is in the Constitution, meaning our own president doesn’t understand the document he swore to uphold when he took office. Knowing the laws of the country you lead is a bare minimum expectation for a president.
A good leader would unite the country by pointing out areas of agreement regarding the immigration process, which should be legal and fair to everyone.
