2014: The Year of Blockbusters

It looks like 2014 is going to be full of action-packed movie sequels, remakes, and combinations of the two.

“The Amazing Spider-Man 2” is the much-awaited sequel to the 2012 film, “The Amazing Spider-Man.” It will feature the same main characters, Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). It also will introduce some new characters, namely Aleksei Sytsevich/The Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and Max Dillon/Electro (Jamie Foxx).

“I thought that Andrew Garfield was a good choice,” said senior Alexandra Villafuerte about the first movie. “But a blonde Emma Stone was kind of weird for me.”

In this sequel, Parker takes on a slew of villains sent by Oscorp and continues his relationship with Stacy. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” hits theaters May 2.

Another sequel, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” features Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) and Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).

As fans know, Rogers wakes up in present day America after being asleep for over 60 years. In the second installment of the Captain America franchise, Rogers struggles to adjust to the modern world and fights against a Russian agent called the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). The film is released April 4.

“Mean Girls” director Mark Waters will be coming out with “Vampire Academy” on Feb. 14. Students can watch as Rose Hathaway (Zoey Deutch) and Natalie Dashkov (Sarah Hyland) attempt to protect peaceful vampires, the Moroi, from the bloodthirsty and immortal Strigoi. Fans are excited for Richelle Mead’s book series, “Vampire Academy,” to be made into a movie.

“Maleficent” shows a different side to the classic Disney tale of “Sleeping Beauty.” It reveals the events that froze Maleficent’s villainous heart and caused her to curse Princess Aurora.  Following other projects such as “Wicked” and “Snow White and the Huntsman,” “Maleficent” is like the darker, more adult version of once-childlike fairy tales.

This highly anticipated film features Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora, and Sharlto Copley as Aurora’s prince, Stefan. Directed by Robert Stromberg, this dark fantasy arrives in theaters May 30.

“I think [Jolie] is a really great actress,” said junior Natalie McElroy. “It’ll be interesting seeing it from a different point of view.”

After “300,” the first of this series released in 2006, fans were left wanting more. Eight years later, fans will finally get their wish. On March 7, “300: Rise of an Empire” will finally hit theaters. This sequel no longer features Gerard Butler as King Leonidas, but Lena Heady is still Queen Gorgo.

New Faces such as Artemisia (Eva Green) and Calisto (Jack o’Connell) will appear in this sequel by new director Noam Murro. The story follows the Greek general Themisocles as his army battles invading Persians under the control of  Xerxes.

The “Divergent” book series by Veronica Roth was picked up in mid-2013, and Neil Burger is planning on directing the new movie with the same name.

Beatrice Prior (Shailene Woodley) lives in futuristic Chicago where people are divided into five different fractions depending on their personality. When she doesn’t fit into any one fraction, “Tris” finds herself in danger as an authoritarian leader attempts to exterminate any other people like her. This sci-fi novel-turned-movie comes to theaters on March 21.

On June 27, Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg) and his daughter Tessa Yeager (Nicola Peltz) find something that could bring down Autobots and Decepticons. Although “Transformers: Age of Extinction” has the same title as the earlier “Transformer” movies with Shia LeBeouf and Megan Fox, their similarities pretty much end there, apart from the transformers themselves.

“RoboCop” will be released on Feb. 12. It is one of many remakes in 2014. Based off the 1987 film by the same name, both movies center around the law and robots in Detroit.

In the new version, Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) is injured during duty and OmniCorp sees an opportunity to create a part-man part-machine police officer. Other recognizable characters are Dr. Dennett Norton (Gary Oldman) and Raymond Sellars (Michael Keaton).

“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” may not contain James Franco from the first movie of the series, “The Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” but that won’t stop fans from seeing this sequel on July 11.

In this sequel, genetically evolved apes, led by Caesar (Andy Serkis), reach a fragile peace with the few human survivors left in this post-apocalyptic time. Both sides are beginning to fight to determine who will become the dominant species of Earth.

The movies this year are going to be packed with action, the theaters packed with people.

With so many remakes and sequels up and coming, fans will be rushing to theaters to watch the next installment of their favorite series.
