Gamers, war buffs and pop enthusiasts everywhere are preparing to sacrifice late night hours and money to game company EA’s brand new triple A title “Battlefield 1.”

“Battlefield 1” is EA’s newest installment in the already successful and renowned franchise “Battlefield.” All of the “Battlefield” games provide the player with a realistic experience of war that includes the chaos of battle and the pain of lost friends and family.

But, many shooter franchises like “Battlefield 1” have gotten stale with their constant use of modern warfare, such as advanced tanks, developed air support, powerful weaponry. This constant cycle has been broken with the release of “Battlefield 1,” an ambitious game that is instead set in the era of World War I.

Set in realistically large battlefields, players can use machine guns to engage in trench warfare, push forward as foot soldiers, shoot from a distance as snipers, and travel on tanks, planes, and horses.

EA has completely revamped the weapons and vehicle system, replacing the currently well-known weaponry with loads of iconic WWI guns, planes, and tanks.

The abundance of weapons and vehicles makes for many different ways to play the multiplayer mode.  Players can wait out in trenches for long periods of time, fly in to offer air support, or rush into the front lines.

With napalm and bullets raining down upon the battlefield, “Battlefield 1” reenacts the true chaos and destruction of the war as accurately as possible. The intricate details of the battlefield and the rapidly changing weather system provide the player with a very realistic and enjoyable gameplay experience.

During actual battles of World War I, weather could determine the outcome. In order to stick to the thematic element of the game EA has implemented a harsh weather system.

Throughout a randomized system, players will experience heavy rain, fog, wind, and even sandstorms. This affects the player’s ability to hear incoming enemies and distorts their vision.

“Battlefield 1” also features a beautifully animated and intense character-driven single player campaign. Within this campaign, the player doesn’t follow only one story for 10 hours, but is instead able to experience numerous shorter campaigns that focus on different soldiers.

The player goes through life-changing moments of many different participants in the war. These participants include an English fighter pilot, an Italian war survivor, a soldier under the command of Lawrence of Arabia, and a French tank driver.

In each of these episodes, the player is able to make choices that determine the eventual outcome of the story, adding a more realistic aspect to the role-play of the campaign.

For example, in the mission “Through Blood and Mud,” players are able to choose between either exploding the enemy’s anti-tank weapons, or infiltrating the camp to take the soldiers out silently.

“Battlefield 1” makes players feel like they are the characters because it is able to display a different perspective on the Great War. Rather than confining it to the names of generals and battles, the game immerses the player directly into the time-period and shows them what it was really like.

Not only is “Battlefield 1”  loads of fun, but it also provides people with knowledge of history at no extra cost.

It could pave way for other games to encourage learning through virtual experience and entertainment.

With the promise of future expansions such as new weapons, vehicles, and story episodes, “Battlefield 1” is going to stick around for a long time.

I give “Battlefield 1” four out of four Grizzly paws.
