It is almost time for what’s expected to be one of the most sensational movies of the year to hit theatres and change the way of life for the Na’vi.
With “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” director James Cameron takes audiences back to Pandora in an immersive new adventure with Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Na’vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) and the Sully family. The film will be released on Friday.
The original 2009 movie “Avatar” won numerous awards, including three Oscars (Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and Best Visual Effects) and two Golden Globes. The film changed the way movies are animated, revealing its evolution beyond traditional drawing into immersive digital realms using live actors’ data to create entirely digital characters, blurring lines between live-action and CGI-driven spectacles.
The first movie in the science fiction franchise was about a paralyzed Marine soldier named Jake Sully, who was sent to the alien moon Pandora. He remotely pilots a genetically engineered “avatar” body to interact with the Na’vi, a native humanoid species.
His mission is to gather information to help a corporation mine unobtanium, the rare, valuable, high-temperature superconducting mineral. Instead, he finds himself falling in love with a Na’vi woman and learning to respect their culture and way of life.
After a 13 year wait, Cameron’s release of “Avatar: The Way of Water,” tells the story of Sully and his wife, Neytiri, who are living with their four children in their Omaticaya home. The movie takes place 16 years after the original.
The second movie follows the Sully family as they are forced to flee their forest home and seek refuge with the aquatic Metkayina clan when the Resources Development Administration (RDA) returns to Pandora.
The movie ends with Neteyam, the oldest of the four children, dead after getting shot in the chest by RDA leader Colonial Quaritch. Fans were devastated at the end of the movie, turning and throwing hate on Spider, a human that was left behind 16 years ago and was in close relationship with the Sully family. Spider was revealed to be Colonial Quaritch’s son.
“Avatar: Fire and Ash” takes place directly after the second movie, with the Sully family grappling with the death of their oldest son, while a new aggressive Na’vi tribe, the Ash people, forms an alliance with Colonial Quaritch.
Based on the official trailer, it seems like the aquatic Metakyina tribe are still in close-proximity with the Sully family, signaling a sense of friendship and hardship, almost like another alliance.
The trailer also shows the Sully family’s daughter Kiri and her elevated connection to Eywa, the powerful, sentient, planet-wide neural network and deity of Pandora. We find out that Varang, the leader of the Ash people, has a deep hatred for Eywa because it did not come for when her home was destroyed by a volcanic eruption.
This can be one of her leading motives to destroy the Sully family as most of their love and belief is based on Eywa. At the end of the trailer, we see Varang holding Kiri hostage, and she says, “Your goddess (referring to Ewya) has no dominion here.” We know that Kiri has one of the most powerful connections to the deity and this quote could be interpreted as Varang’s true motive is to destroy the heart of Ewya, Kiri.
The movie will follow an exciting adventure as the Sully family has two new enemies that will do whatever it takes to destroy them. They will have to overcome their emotional struggles while also dealing with a new opposing force.
There is no doubt this will be a phenomenal movie, since according to Statistics, as of November 2025, “Avatar” (2009) was the most commercially successful movie of all time, grossing about $2.92 billion across the globe.
