Music’s biggest night of the year is happening at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Feb. 1 as the 68th Annual Grammy Awards Show takes center stage.
As the final round of voting begins, the music industry prepares for a ceremony that promises to be a battle between established icons and viral stars who have redefined the charts over the last year.
Most people look forward to seeing the results of the “Big Four” categories: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist.
The nominations list, revealed in November, is headlined by a heavy-hitting cast of artists.
Kendrick Lamar leads the group with nine nominations, thanks to the cultural tidal wave of his work over the last year, including his top charting song “luther” with SZA.
Behind him is Lady Gaga with seven nominations, who marked a massive return to the industry this year with the album “MAYHEM,” featuring her hit single “Abracadabra.”
Rounding off the list of top nominations are Bad Bunny and Sabrina Carpenter, who have six nominations each.
For Bad Bunny, this year’s ceremony is especially significant as it is exactly one week before his Super Bowl halftime performance at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. This sets him up for a career-defining month.
Meanwhile, Carpenter’s dominance in three of the “Big Four” categories (Album, Record, and Song of the Year) solidifies her transition from a rising pop star to a central pillar of the music industry.
One of the most compelling categories for the night will be the fierce competition in the Best New Artist category.
On one side, viral sensations such as Addison Rae and Alex Warren have successfully transitioned from social media creators to legitimate musical contenders.
Leon Thomas has the rare case of being a Best New Artist nominee but also having an “Album of the Year” nomination. Thomas is the first artist to get this combination since Billie Eilish in 2020 and Norah Jones in 2003. Additional nominees for this category include the K-pop inspired global girl group KATSEYE alongside the jazzy Olivia Dean, proving a diverse range of nominees.
The nominations of The Marías alongside Sombr suggests that The Recording Academy is finally looking past radio music to find what younger generations are actually streaming.
The 68th Grammys will also look a little different this year as The Recording Academy has introduced several new categories, like Best Traditional Country Album and Best Album Cover. These additions reflect the effort to honor the roots of American music and the visual artistry behind physical and digital releases.
Best Country Album has also officially been renamed to Best Contemporary Country Album to better distinguish it from the new category.
In a move to ensure fairness, the Academy has also updated their voting process. For the first time in Grammy history, the ballots will be presented to voters in a randomized order rather than alphabetically, a technical change that is intended to prevent “voter fatigue” from favoring artists at the beginning of the alphabet.
As the final votes are tallied and the industry prepares for the ceremony, the Grammys represent more than just a trophy presentation. They serve as the best of the year.
With a lineup that balances the massive commercial power of pop stars with the raw, experimental energy of some up and coming artists, the Academy is showing that it can stay in sync with the evolving culture.
