The fog is rolling back in, and after more than a decade of silence, Silent Hill is returning to theaters.
“Return to Silent Hill” releasing on Jan. 23, 2026, is the third film in the Silent Hill franchise that was adapted from a popular video game by the same name.
The first film, “Silent Hill,” introduced fans in 2006 to a fog-covered town where fear comes from atmosphere and psychological tension rather than repetitive jump scares. The story follows a parent’s search for their missing child.
The sequel, “Silent Hill: Revelation,” continued the story with a stronger focus on visuals and action when it came out in 2012.
The films introduced Silent Hill to audiences who had never played the video games, emphasizing mystery and mood over traditional horror.
Now, the franchise that is known for an eerie atmosphere is back with “Return to Silent Hill,” which promises shadows, secrets, and even more fear when it pulls back into theaters on Friday.
“The first thing that comes to mind when I hear ‘Silent Hill’ is a hill that’s quiet and is sort of creepy,” freshman Audrey Freji said. “It kind of makes me think of horror.”
“Return to Silent Hill” is the newest movie in a long running horror franchise. The film brings back the famous fog-covered town where nothing’s what it seems.
“I thought of the video game series,” junior Marcus Casher said. “Psych horror is different because it has to do with human minds, which is more relatable and scary.”
Instead of relying on loud jump scares like most modern horror movies, “Silent Hill” has a slow tension, the kind that makes viewers think, not just scream.
Fans have been waiting years for a new movie, and this one is expected to reintroduce the haunting world to a whole new audience.
“Watching psychological movies makes you feel tense the whole time,” freshman Adelina Voskresenska said. “But with jump scare movies, you wait for something scary to happen and when you actually lose hope you get a jump scare.”
The movie is directed by Christophe Gans, who made the first “Silent Hill” film. This new film promises a more emotional story, following a character named James Sunderland who is returning to the town to face something from his past.
“Horror games really stand out because no other game gives a tense feeling like a horror game,” Voskresenska said.
Early previews focus on mystery and the strange creatures, but with new visuals and a more modern style than the past movies.
Even if some students haven’t played the games, “Return to Silent Hill” might still interest them. With so many game movie adaptations coming out, this movie stands out for its darker style.
“Video game movies are usually a hit because of nostalgia or simply due to technology improvement and the ability to create cinematic stories easier,” freshman Saanvi Koppolu said.
Sophomore Yasmeen Sakhi sees a clear difference between video games adapted into movies.
“The difference between the movie and the game is that psychological aspect is more in the mind,” Sakhi said. “[The movie has] internal threats while horror in general mainly [has] external threats and monsters.”
Fans are hoping the movie brings back the slow building fear the franchise is known for.
Trailers show a darker and more visual story, which has many fans curious to see how the new movie mixes the idea with the classic movie.
“Modern audiences will certainly like this movie because its plot surrounds the setting of a video game which can be played by a range of people,” Koppolu said.
When the lights go down, the long awaited mysterious town will finally be back with even better, creepier, and more emotional visuals.
